Masterpieces of the collection Kunstmuseum Bern

The Kunstmuseum Bern is the oldest fine art museum in Switzerland with a permanent collection. It is among the leading of its kind in Switzerland. The new mounting of the collection over three levels of the museum brings you face to face with the most outstanding masterpieces of the Kunstmuseum Bern’s collection.

The collection is constantly expanding and changing, spanning the Gothic period through to current times. It is internationally famous especially for its focus on 19th-century French art and unique bodies of early modernist works. The hanging is a selection of some 200 masterpieces from our enormous holdings, presenting a comprehensive cross section of the collection. It commences with Duccio, the Bernese Master of the Carnation, and Niklaus Manuel and boasts highlight upon highlight of Western art, from Delacroix to Manet, Cézanne, and van Gogh for starters. On your way through the new presentation you can admire Anker, Hodler, and Vallotton through to Picasso, Klee, Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, and Rothko, concluding your round with Scully and Fischli-Weiss.

The catalogue of masterpieces published for the new mounting of the collection is the perfect companion for a discovery tour through the Kunstmuseum Bern. Arranged chronologically and according to artists, the catalogue of the collection not only explores the highlights of European art history – based on our holdings – but also comprises a historical survey of the genesis of the Kunstmuseum Bern and its collection.
