Colourful, powerful, pioneering – the exhibition Kirchner x Kirchner presents 65 major works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner at the Kunstmuseum Bern. One highlight is the reunification of Alpsonntag. Szene am Brunnen and Sonntag der Bergbauern from the Chancellor’s Office in Berlin. The two works are being shown together for the first time in over 90 years.
Scorned as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis, Kirchner (1880–1938) is now seen as one of the outstanding protagonists of classical modern art. The exhibition recalls the largest retrospective of his lifetime, which he curated himself at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1933. It focuses on Kirchner as the curator of his own oeuvre and shows how he staged his artistic development through deliberate juxtapositions and revisions.
